“black history (month)”

Every year February comes, and I take the time to reconsider

Why are we still limited to one month?

When we built this country on our backs, no payment upfront.

You say: Black Lives Matter.

But do you really believe that?

Because actions speak louder than words.

And this time they’re yelling.

Am I supposed to be grateful for 28 days?

28 days to call attention to the beauty and pain

To be forgotten for the rest of the year and only spoken about when provoked

And it’s interesting because the problem has already been diagnosed

But this issue is so engrossed

Into every fiber of this country’s being

Black history has more meaning

But I will keep on dreaming

Of an America full of healing

Racism retreating

Inclusion intervening

An America where Black history has true meaning
